WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY

MEGAN TAYLOR and KRISTINA EVANS

Mental health is not something that is confined to only affecting those with diagnosed illnesses such as anxiety or depression. It is all of our business! Mental health refers to our psychological, emotional and social well-being, meaning everyone has mental health. However, it’s on a spectrum, and our mental health and wellbeing can go up or down. Over recent years we have witnessed an increasing acknowledgement of how important taking care of our mental health is, in a push to make the world realise that there is no health without mental health.

Here at the Be Free Campaign, we aim to provide the resources for self-help when dealing with mental health. We recognise that often the time taken to meet with medical professionals is far too long, so our website offers tools and advice (through quick-fire infographics and more detailed articles) in the hope of establishing a better understanding of mental health as a whole, how you can help those around you and what steps to take in order to help yourself.

Further than that, we strive to improve mental health through community outreach. This entails holding educational workshops and empowering ambassador programmes, from which organisations and individuals are encouraged to go forth and implement the necessary mental health initiatives we provide them with, ultimately propelling change through the community. Whilst also partnering with social media influencers to spread the word to their followers on prevention and support strategies, with the goal of reaching as wide an audience as possible.

Being a change for good

Be the friend you would want to have. We all struggle from time to time, and often the easiest way to relieve this load is by sharing your problems and talking to a friend or family member. Supporting one another is vital and it can come in all different shapes and sizes. For example, being a good friend doesn’t have to stop at listening to their anxieties, it can also include checking in even when they say they’re fine, or simply staying in contact and having chats about your favourite topics to take their mind off of other stresses.
